The only reason why I say it is possibly case hardened is because of the color of the journals and the nose and rear seal areas are all dark metal in color and this is not normal for any Amc crankshaft. It could use a thread chaser to clean it up. At one time, in the distant past, this crankshaft had been possible case hardened, to harden up the surface metal on all of the journals.

Please examine the photos and you can see that Mallory metal has been cut and sized and fitted into the first two counter weights and the last two counter weights. I made many measurements on several areas on the same journal to make sure that there was no changes in the size on the same journal or on the other different journals. It is not a light medium grey color which would possible indicate it had been nitrites for a hardening process.

This is a flat back crankshaft, meaning that there is no ledge or off set step on the back of this crankshaft, it is just flat hence the name. The threaded holes in the back of the crankshaft are also in good shape.

The plus is that you can use any harmonic balance and flywheel flex plate that properly fits and does not have any carry over.

Please carefully examine, study, and review all photos, before placing any bids on this item. What makes this crankshaft hard to find is, most people do not even know where to find this forged crankshaft or that this is a stock piece from the factory. The only draw back about this is that I do not know what bob weight was used to balance this crankshaft.

The hole in the front nose of the crankshaft is in good shape. It is not helix coiled. 095 inches 2 and inches and they all measured tight when I checked them.

The journals are all stock in size they have not been welded, modified, changed, or damaged in any way. This crankshaft is at least 40 years old, so please realize that it is used and make sure it is what you want.

It is not resized. 750 inches 2 and 3/4 inches in size, all are all a tight fit and none are loose when I measure each of the journals.

It is not stripped. Up for offer your consideration is a stock size journals, vintage, Amc 401 forged steel crankshaft, it has stock size rods journals and main journals. There is some wear on this crankshaft.

I have wire brushed the surfaces, to clean up the surface rust and to show the quality of each of the journals.

Before it was cleaned up, I was told that this crankshaft was , crack checked, at all rod journals, all main journals, rear seal areas, front nose areas, counter weight to rod journal areas, counter weight to main journal areas, and no cracks were found. This goes for both the main journals and the rod journals. I would like to glass bleed the crankshaft, but do not have access to a media blasting machine at this time.

They are not stripped out, resized, helix coiled, or repaired, in any way, as far as I can tell, they are completely stock. The journals are worn, you can see the wear in the journals in the photos. I do not know if that makes it easier or more difficult to find parts for this of crankshaft.
